Born in England in 1949, to an English mother and Scots father, I grew up with a
romantic view of Scotland and moved here in 1972. During a brief academic career
I got involved with an agriculture student and ended up as a farmer's wife on a
small farm in the Aberdeenshire hills. To supplement the income I wrote articles
for various papers and magazines on country matters.
After our two children left home we diversified into growing organic herbs and progressed
onto producing jams and chutneys in partnership of our daughter and using vegetables
grown for us by our son.
With more leisure I am learning to write poetry and short stories in an attempt
to express things that non-fiction can't deal with.

Yarns from my sewing machine
Fiona Wilson
The reel of thread
ran empty
leaving a cardboard tube
labelled Sylko.
It had been my mother's.
A thousand yards
finally finished
after 30 years.
Threads of memory
neglected, underused
through the years,
they too run out
leaving only
the essential
unforgettable core.
But they are still present
in the nightie I made,
the children's clothes,
the costumes for a school play,
the pair of curtains,
the kitchen cushions we sit on every day.
The patchwork of daily life
made from the yarn of memory.
